CUSAT is academically structured into 9 faculties: Engineering, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Law, Marine Sciences, Medical Sciences & Technology, Science, Social Sciences and Technology.

CUSAT has at present 27 Departments of study and research offering Graduate and Post Graduate programmes across a wide spectrum of disciplines in frontier areas of engineering, science, technology, humanities, law & management.

Centres in specialized thematic areas have been established by the University, to encourage and promote collaborative, multi-disciplinary interaction. Conceived as umbrella organizations for inter-faculty interaction and joint enterprises, aimed at wholesome integration, assimilation and dissemination of knowledge beyond all sectarian confines, these Centres are expected to engage themselves in unfettered intellectual pursuits.

Vision and Mission


The University’s basic philosophy and goals find eloquent expression in its Coat of Arms emblazoning the motto “Tejaswinavadhitamastu” which in essence means “may the wisdom accrued defy us both the teacher and the taught and percolate to the Universe in its totality”, which in essence means “may learning illumine us both” (the teacher and the taught).


The University shall have the following objectives as its mission:

(i) to prosecute and promote research in applied science, technology, industry, commerce, management and social  science for the advancement of knowledge and for the betterment of society; 

(ii) to provide facilities and offer opportunities for graduate and post-graduate education in applied science, technology, industry, commerce, management and social science by instruction, training, research, development and extension and by such other means as the University may deem fit;

(iii) to devise and implement programmes of education in applied science, technology, industry, commerce, management and social science that are relevant to the changing needs of society, in terms of breadth of diversity and depth of specialization;

(iv) to serve as a centre for fostering co-operation and exchange of ideas between the academic and research community on the one hand and industry on the other;

(v) to organise exchange programmes with other institutions of repute in India and abroad with a view to keeping abreast of the latest developments in relevant areas of teaching and research. 

The main campus is 1.5 km off the National Highway 47 in South Kalamassery. The 180-acre (0.73 km2) campus consists of the Administrative office, the Central Library, Computer Centre, departments, labs, workshops, School of Engineering (SOE Campus) and School of Engineering (Siberia Campus), canteens, guest house, hostels and playgrounds. The Administrative office coordinates all the activities of the departments and affiliated colleges. The fully computerised Central Library is a central source of information for the academic community of the CUSAT. The Computer Center provides free internet access to the students. The campus hosts the buildings of the departments. The SOE campus has divisions of engineering and corresponding labs and workshops. The Siberia campus block consists of classrooms for engineering courses and a new lab building (NLB) which houses department centres and labs. The campus has a Triveni Coffee House and other canteens. There are three men's hostels — Siberia, Sarovar and Sanathana — and five women's hostels — Aishwarya, Anashwara,Athulya,Anaga and Ananya. A new B. Tech hostel has been set up. The campus hosts the accommodation of its employees.

The Lakeside Campus, around 12 km from the Main Campus is set in Cochin city on the estuarine waterfront. This campus consists of the School of Ocean Science and Technology, School of Industrial Fisheries, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Chemical Oceanography, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics and Department of Physical Oceanography. The School of Marine Sciences has a library that is regarded as one of the largest marine science libraries in Asia and a research vessel for coastal water studies. The school has academic interactions with other universities and research institutes in India and outside.

The Pulincunnoo Campus in Kuttanad, Alappuzha District is 65 km from the Main Campus. It is home to the Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad ( CUCEK) and the Cochin University College of Computer Applications (CUCCA). The campus is surrounded by water scenery, temples and churches. Allappuzha is called the "Venice of the East" and is famous for the annual Nehru Trophy boat race.

Hostel accommodation for around 600 male and 700 female students is available for Undergraduate/ Postgraduate / Research students.

Application forms for admission to University Hostels are available online at the University website Printout of the completely filled in application form is to be submitted to the respective Department office. Head of Department will forward all the applications together to the hostel office after verification and giving priority number based on the distance of home town from the University. Admission to hostels is not the right of any student. The Syndicate reserves the right to open or close any or all of the hostels, or parts thereof or deny admission to or expel any student, or shift a student from one hostel to another - all without assigning any reason. Admission to the Hostel is open to full-time regular students admitted to a programme of study of not less than two semesters. Priority is given to SC/ST,physically challenged, foreign and to those students whose normal place of residence is more than 15 kms away from the campus. Separate accommodation is arranged for students under international collaboration.Full-time research students and fellows working in sponsored research schemes in the University shall only be considered if seats are available. No Ph.D student will be allowed to stay in hostels for a total of more than 3 years in his/her academic career in the University. Full-time students under the 'Faculty Improvement Programme' drawing regular salary from their parent institutions are not eligible for hostel accommodation.Accommodation in the hostels is limited to the duration of the programmes to which a student is admitted and he/she is required to vacate the hostel within seven days of his/her taking the last written/practical/viva-voce examination of the programme. No one is eligible for accommodation in the hostel for taking supplementary examinations. A student admitted to an M.Phil programme will not be allowed accommodation beyond a period of 12 months from the date of admission to the hostel. During vacation the hostels will remain closed. All students shall remove their personal belongings and vacate the hostels during vacation. Payment of dues to hostels shall be made in the department/schools concerned. Detailed rules/fees etc. relating to admission to hostels will be supplied to students at the time of their admission to the hostel.

The Campus Cafe is open from 8.00 A.M. to 8.00 P.M. on all working days including Saturdays. A wide variety of South Indian and North Indian dishes are available. During lunch time Meals are available at very nominal rates.

Physical Education department is functioning in the campus 
Various sport events are conducted in the campus with the participation of the colleges from different parts of the state.

Department of Youth Welfare is a formal platform in the University to design and implement youth policy which includes the issues related to motivation, participation, promotion and socio-economic and cultural settings within which young people grow up. The Department will act as a driving force for the student and youth community to epitomize their academic excellence through doing and learning. The department is taking care of various aspects of student welfare like students counseling, training, NSS, NCC, government and non government sponsored youth projects, financial aid & scholarships, health care, games & sports, cultural activities etc.

National Service Scheme(NSS)is a permanent youth programme under the ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports ,Government of India, launched on 24th September 1969, the birth centenary of the Father of Nation.The Motto of NSS ‘Not Me But You’ reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students to develop appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration to other living beings.The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrine in this motto , which under lines on the belief that welfare of an individual is ultimately dependence on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore the NSS volunteer shall strive for the well being of the society.

Cultural Programmes

Various cultural events like University Youth Festival, Talent Time, Anchorage etc. are conducted in the campus with the full participation of the colleges in the country.
