Bachelor of Fisheries Science


The Bachelor of Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc) degree programme is offered in three campuses: (1) Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi (with an intake of 60 students per year) (2) Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri (with an intake of 60 students per year) and (3) Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thalainayeru (with an intake of 20 students per year). A total of 140 students are admitted every year in BFSc degree programme excluding NRI and foreign category.

VISION

"Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood"

Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) is a State-funded Fisheries University in India imparting professional education, research and training to enhance fish production and utilization by following the State Agricultural University (SAU) pattern and syllabi.

HISTORICAL  BACKGROUND

  • The Department of Fisheries was started in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) during 1973.
  • The Fisheries College, Thoothukudi was established in 1977 and the first batch of students for B.F.Sc., programme were admitted. The Fisheries College was upgraded as Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) during the year 1989.
  • The Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI), Thoothukudi became a constituent Institute of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) with effect from 20.09.1989.
  • The Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) was established on June 19, 2012 with headquarters at Nagapattinam.

CAMPUSES OF THE UNIVERSITY

The Fisheries College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Thoothukudi, the second oldest college in the country, offers B.F.Sc. (60 seats),  M.F.Sc. (in ten disciplines viz., Fisheries Resource Management, Aquatic Environment Management, Aquaculture, Aquatic Animal Health, Fish Biotechnology, Fisheries Engineering and Technology, Fish Processing Technology, Fish Quality Assurance and Management, Fisheries Economics and Fisheries Extension) and Ph.D. (in seven disciplines viz., Fisheries Resource Management, Aquatic  Environment Management, Aquaculture, Fish Processing Technology, Fish Quality Assurance and Management, Fisheries Economics and Fisheries Extension) degree programmes. This Institute is located in Thoothukudi campus and has field facilities like Shore Lab Field Research Facility (SFRF) in the fishing harbour and Mariculture Research Farm Facility (MRFF) at Tharuvaikulam to facilitate education and research activities.

         The Fisheries College and Research Institute located in Ponneri campus, Chennai was established in 2012 offers B.F.Sc. (60 seats) degree programme from 2014-15. This Institute has field facilities like Pulicat lake Field Research Facility (PFRF), Brackishwater Research Farm Facility (BRFF) at TNFU, OMR campus, Vaniyanchavadi and Advanced Research Farm Facility (ARFF) at TNFU, Madhavaram Campus to undertake education and research activities.

           

               The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thalainayeru (Nagapattinam District) is offering BFSc degree programme from the academic year 2017-18 onwards with an intake of 20 students per year.

                The College of Fisheries Engineering located (CoFE) in Nagapattinam campus is offering B.E. degree in Fisheries Engineering (20 seats) from 2015-16. This Institute has Fish Processing Plant Facility located at the fishing harbour complex for undertaking academic and research activities.

             The Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Institute of Fisheries Biotechnology, Vaniyanchavadi, OMR, Chennai are offereing postgraduate courses besides conducting research and extensiopn programmes.

EXTENSION

                This University is instrumental in bringing out developments in the fisheries sector in the State of Tamil Nadu through various extension and training programs covering all aspects, including farm advisory services, answer to farmer's queries, organizes mass awareness programmes, fish farmers' meets, stakeholders linkage through mass media, Industry-Institute meets and Exhibitions.

ADVOCACY/ CERTIFICATION / CONSULTANCY SERVICES

  • This University is involved in certification of the seafood products through the Fish Quality 
    monitoring and Certification centre at Thoothukudi.
  • University is having network of laboratories for surveillance of aquatic animal for diseases. For which, one state Referral Lab at Chennai and Regional Labs at Thoothukudi and Nagapattinam are functioning.

COLLABORATION/ NEW INITIATIVES

A MOU was signed between TNFU and Auburn University, USA on 07.10.2013 in the presence of Dr. William H. Daniels to have collaborative research in various fields of fisheries and to have staff and student exchange programmes. A high level delegation from the Guangdong Ocean University (GDOU), China led by the Vice-President of the University, Prof. Zhu Jianzhen had bilateral discussion with faculty of TN FU led by the Vice-Chancellor for developing a co-operation between GDOU and TNFU on 16.10.2014.

Directorate Extension Education

The Directorate of Extension Education of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University is located at the TNFU premises, Nagapattinam. This Directorate is functioning with the objective of planning, co-ordination and execution of all extension programmes of the entire University in close consultation and co – operation with the line department and other organizations associated with the development of fisheries. The Directorate of Extension Education brings out extension publications and periodicals, organizes, radio programmes, TV programmes, exhibitions, awareness programmes, etc., to disseminate fisheries technologies among the various stakeholders for adoption. The Directorate organizes various types of training programmes including entrepreneurial and skill development programmes for popularizing the new/improved fisheries technologies and for developing skilled man power for undertaking various tasks in the industrial units associated with fish production and processing. The Directorate brings out a farm magazine viz., Meenvalakathir, a quarterly magazine, published in Tamil for the benefit of aqua farmers, fisherfolk and fisheries entrepreneurs. TNFU Newsletter is another periodical published by the Directorate on the various activities of the University.
